Roundhouse to Return

Postby jon » Wed Jun 12, 2019 4:07 pm

The CRTC approved the purchase of Roundhouse Radio CIRH-FM by South Fraser, the owner of Pulse FM CISF-FM in Surrey.

Dan Sys reports in his Canadian Radio News that South Fraser has promised to keep the Roundhouse identity on-air.

Upon reading the decision, it is still possible, but unlikely, that South Fraser will reject the decision/sale which it stated were based on a number of concessions that the CRTC did not grant in their decision today.

My understanding was that South Fraser was buying RHR to simulcast Pulse FM and get it's signal into downtown Vancouver and the North Shore. Without the concessions, there is no point in resurrecting what was RHR. The PPMs proved the point that there were no listeners and the format had zero appeal in the Vancouver market.

Who would drop over a million $ into a bottomless pit that has little or no chance of any kind of a return? Wouldn't the RHR corporate people be responsible for the $580,345.00 CCD payment?

Hey Jim, The very first attempt to simulcast was shut down by the CRTC and Suki was told to go back and try again.....those of us in the original cast are watching this closely.

The CRTC Decision makes it very clear that the previous owners are no longer responsible for the CCD money. Likely meaning that the original RHR filed for Bankruptcy.

A low power station with barely any listenership, wanted to simulcast on a low power station that had barely any listenership? I’m still fascinated by what the play is here apart from losing buckets of money every day.

If they meet the COLs of both stations ON both stations, they can still mostly simulcast. And even though it would make programming on PULSE more difficult, it wouldn't necessarily matter as they're not rated.

I suppose, but wasn’t the Pulse license granted on the premise that the station would be Surrey centric or at least South of The Fraser? And Roundhouse, with its low wattage was positioned as a downtown Vancouver station. I’m not sure how you’re supposed to satisfy both jurisdictions at once. And if it’s music, what format would make any kind of commercial sense?
