Looking at the latest Jack ratings, I could see Rogers running the Canucks games there, though 104.9 still seems more likely, with 1130 unlikely.

As Dan pointed out on his Facebook Canadian Radio News page, All Sports on either FM would require a change in CRTC license, as full-time Spoken Word is not allowed with a standard FM license.

To clarify, my guesses about where the Canucks would go had a big assumption: no Rogers station would go All Sports. They would just continue to do what they do now whenever they weren't running the Play By Play and Pre- and Post Game Shows.

GrumpyOldMan also has a good point. Looking forward, since these things take quite a bit of time to get approved by the CRTC, a long term solution would be applying for 900 KHz as an All Sports station. Or even a mix of Sports and some other format.

Possible since Rogers only has one AM in Greater Vancouver right now.

JACK is more likely than Kiss, because at least with JACK there's some demo crossover. If you throw them on Kiss, you create an island where you've got a completely different audience from the rest of the week. That's a sales nightmare.

Canucks are moving on the radio dial

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – There is some big news involving the Vancouver Canucks — no Willie Desjardins isn’t being fired and General Manager Jim Benning is safe too, but it sounds like the team is moving on the radio that is.

Last night the long-time radio rights holder tweeted that its 11-year relationship with the team is coming to an end. There has been rampant speculation for months as to where the team will land and at this point it is unclear, although an announcement is expected later today.

Despite their recent struggles on the ice, the Canucks have enjoyed a financial windfall over the last number of years when it comes to broadcast rights. In 2013, Rogers Sportsnet signed a 10-year regional deal which, according to Forbes, pays the team $25 million a year. And the last deal on the radio side had the Canucks reportedly making just under $3 million annually.

Rogers is the parent company of NEWS 1130.

TSN 1040, longtime radio home of Canucks, loses broadcast rights to Rogers

Published: March 8, 2017. Updated: March 8, 2017 6:40 PM PST

TSN 1040, the longtime radio home of the Vancouver Canucks, has lost its broadcast contract with the team to Rogers Media.

The news came in the form of a Twitter post on TSN Radio Vancouver’s official account.

“Thank you @Canucks for 11 great seasons of hockey on #TSN1040,” it read.

TSN 1040 had been broadcasting Vancouver Canucks games, as well as pre- and post-game shows, for more than a decade. Staff at the station had also been reassured contract negotiations were coming along smoothly and would be renewed, as TSN had put up a strong three-year bid.

However, on Wednesday evening, the station announced the team had opted to move their broadcast contract over to Rogers Media, though it remains unclear where the game broadcasts will show up on the dial.

Some have suggested the move to Rogers opens up the possibility for them to launch a sports-based radio station here in Vancouver, as Rogers owns the Toronto Blue Jays and would likely want to carry their broadcasts across the country on its own station.

Currently, Rogers owns 55 radio stations across Canada, including News 1130, 96.9 Jack FM, and Kiss Radio here in B.C.

The Vancouver Canucks also call Rogers Arena their home ice.

With Rogers having done the national TV rights deal with the NHL this move is somewhat predictable. It's a bad move for the Canucks at a time when fans are rapidly losing interest in the team as it is. Moving your broadcast to a second rate broadcaster isn't going to help. The Canucks will never win a Stanley Cup as long as the meddling millionaires own the team.

I assume the official announcement will be made on air by 10AM today. There is a staff meeting happening at 2440 between 9:30 and 10 to share some exciting news.

If the games do end up on 96.9. they could rebrand as 96.9 JOCK FM.

From a Sportsnet release about Canucks signing with Rogers radio:
"Details about the Vancouver Canucks radio broadcasts will be announced at a later date."

If Rogers wanted to do it right they would setup a sports station in Vancouver but share programming with other sports stations on their network. Nothing worse than tuning into Team 1040 and hearing some guy talk about US College Basketball and Football or other major sports from a US perspective.

On the weekend, I was DX'ing and got completely thrown off on 1150, hearing the kind of U.S. Sports-centric programming you are talking about, and assuming it was a U.S. station. Turned out to be Fox Sports Radio on 1150 Kelowna, which they run late evenings and all nights on the weekend and all nights on weekdays. In Vancouver, 1410 also runs Fox Sports Radio All Nights, and 1040 runs ESPN.

That's not the reason for American programming, it's because it's cheap. And no one has had national programming since the early days of the TEAM network. If it's free to run jays, hockey talk, Tim & Sid etc in Vancouver, they'll do it, whether it "works" depends solely on whether local programming (ie morning show) breaks even.

If they have to start looking around for cheap or free programming regardless of whether it fits in the marketplace then they have to seriously question the viability of the format.

It's not that cheap, simulcasting Rome (live) is rumoured to be north of $100,000 each year.

Can't see the ESPN network (games included) being anything less than six figures either.

I would be surprised if they rebrand Kiss to all sports.
Remember, as a CHILLIWACK station first, the focus would have to be on that market then out. i believe they have had their hand slapped in the past and the commission would likely come down on them again.
Also, isn't "news talk/sports talk" on FM still a specialty and require application to make a change?
