If I only had a dollar for every time the afternoon male host STUTTERS in the afternoons...

I still wouldn't be as rich as if I had a dollar for every time the CKNW At Night host tries to complete a sentence without saying 'Ah' in the evenings.

Not only can't he say a sentence without saying 'ah',
not even can't he say a phrase,
now he even manages to say 'ah' in the middle of a word...
AND often even in the middle of the call letters for God sake!

(For the record, I really enjoyed listening to him doing drop-ins with Stephen Quinn during his time with CBC).
That was then...this is now.

Painful, painful, painful radio to listen to.

For a PRIME EXAMPLE:

Open the CKNW audio vault.

Go to 7 PM hour on August 29th.

Start listening about 7:54.

Where the heck in the -ah- Program Director!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anybody else noticed the annoying habit of our current Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, when he is speaking extemporaneously (not from a written speech) that he can't utter many words in a row without interjecting an "ah"? It's so bad that the listener is reduced to counting the number of times he says "ah" and completely misses the content of his remarks.

Absolutely... I've actually come to like the guy, even though I didn't vote for him... but surely he could afford a speech therapist for a week or two and rid himself of that horrible crutch.

Learnin' ta speak good is a necessity - in every endeavour.
Learning to speak well is an option.
In broadcast it's a requirement - or not.
Those who refuse to participate in acquiring such skills may be gravely disappointed.
Plus, because and as a result of a sin of omission, there is that "Lake o' Fire"-thingy, as well.
Thus endeth the sermon.

Seems that most people are focussing on the actual job the PM does and not how he says it.
His approval rating is up to 61.8 percent - something any politician would be happy to have.
Houston, We're dealing with morons!.

I'm waiting for the day that Steele finally snaps and decks this second rate on air partner. She can't say five words without the annoying little stutter box butting in with some idiotic comment.

Maybe an onsite speech therapist would be able to help with the Ah and Um fest NW listeners are treated to each morning and night.

I don't understand.
If it's so annoying, why are you people listening?

Occasionally I'll punch into NW out of habit, looking for news, a traffic report or some stimulating talk. I seldom stick around for more than a couple of minutes.

I'm sure Lynda Steele gets home many nights and wonders aloud "Why did I leave CTV?". Drex has brought the afternoon drive show down to a new level. Besides the stuttering and interrupting, you really
don't have to tell NW listeners daily that you're a gay boy and you smoke weed. Nobody cares, and they don't have to be reminded daily. You're not new age trendsetter you think you are.

Cynthia,

I've mentioned I'm gay once in our past 28 shows, and it fit the context of the conversation.

also, I've never said I smoke pot on this show either.

Why would you go on a radio news group and lie about what you have heard?

Thanks for listening to Steele & Drex on CKNW!

I've noticed the PM's 'ah's' too. I think it's because he's essentially a francophone who does a creditable job with English, but may still be thinking in French.

I guess no one remembers Bob "uh" Stanfield or Daryl "y'know" Sittler.
It's OK for non-broadcasters to do this, they're supposedly NOT trained speakers and writers.
90 per cent of those on-air today never could have made it through the CBC Announcers Test.

Answer to Russ:
I listen to a lot of radio these days while driving - I'm on the road 5 or 6 hours a day ... so I scan both dials frequently.
Thankfully got a break from the ah/ah/ahah guy tonight; Lee Powell was sounding like a million bucks.

Like a lot of people, I don't listen to Steele and Drex - I listen to STEELE.
WHY is it that this 'professional broadcaster' sounds like he is holding his nose when he speaks,
has an annoying accent that immediately tells people he is not from around here
- but still expects to be listened to as a 'voice of authority' who knows BC,
sounds affected,
and STAMMERS and sssSTUTTERS while constantly interrupting.

Couldn't help but notice that Drex didn't stutter when he WROTE to Cynthia !!!!

Mike Cleaver is...right.
Again.

All I can say is "where is the program director".

In a cubicle in Toronto, staring at a spreadsheet.

Though not always the case, local management has been given so little room to move that the traditional powers of a program director have moved to head office.
