Durham radio applies to purchase CIRR

Postby Aaron » Mon Mar 22, 2021 7:04 pm

Durham Radio of Oshawa, Ontario has applied to purchase CIRR 98.3. They propose a Smooth Jazz / Rhythmic AC format.

Durham operates a Country/Rock/Oldies cluster in Oshawa, and a Country/Oldies pair in Hamilton. Their Hamilton station was originally Smooth Jazz - that format was moved to HD/Online, and the FM was flipped to Country with great success.

I wish them good luck. It appears Durham Radio seems interested in trying "The Wave" format in LA in Vancouver.

I will admit that I will be one of the 150 listeners if Durham is successful.

I wonder if wave in Vancouver is successful if they may try for the 106.3 frequency recently vacated? 98.3 conflicts with star FM in Chilliwack, pretty much preventing it's signal from being listenable past Surrey and making it basically a city center station.

that frequency seems jinxed. If i am not mistaken it was orignally going to be used for religious station. I was actually in their studios downtown in the mid70's while working for BC Tel before the CRTC quashed them. (maybe it was 106.9)

From what I understand the CRTC is reserving 106.3 for a future Aboriginal station. I can't ever see that happening. If a successful company like Northern Native Broadcasting couldn't make a "go of it" with CJNY I really doubt that anyone can. Durham Radio should work something out with the CRTC to swap frequencies and designate 98.3 as the new reserved Aboriginal frequency. If that isn't possible Durham might also take a look at establishing a repeater on 98.7 (the frequency of the defunct CKPM Port Moody). When CKPM was on the air they decently covered most of the Eastern Suburbs where WAVE 98.3's signal will be overtaken by Chilliwack.

yeah i was surprised CJNY withdrew. I heard them in Smithers when I went for a high school reunion and they seemed very popular. Mind you it was basically a classic rock format with little native stuff in there except the DJ's. they probably would not get away with that in the Vancouver market where there are 2 stations already with that format, so they may have figured they would have a tough time with an aboriginal format, whatever that means.

Apparently they are now simulcasting the new Vancouver station on the Toronto HD2 outlet. That's a switch.

Interesting. Does that also apply to the other Durham HD facilities in Hamilton and Ajax which were running CHKX HD2 (WAVE 94.7)from Hamilton?

Yes they are all simulcasting Vancouver. Obviously. it appears as if they consider Vancouver their flagship station now, I suppose since it is the only one on a normal FM frequency. It is hard to say if they can remain successful with its limited coverage, I like its format, it's something a bit different. . I still suspect they will go after 106.3, or convince CKSR to do a frequency change which should not not be such a big deal in their coverage area. i do not know where its transmitter is located, but it sure puts out a strong signal to the west. 98.5 or 98.7, now the Port Moody station is gone, would work.

I believe WAVE 98.3's tower is on the roof of the 35 floor Park Place building at Burrard & Dunsmuir.
